The month of August was a great month for many of our friends and colleagues work in Hispanic Ministry. Please read on to find out about the awardees and make sure to congratulate them!  

José and Digna López

On August 21st, Catholic Extensions (a national organization devoted to supporting poor Catholic communities) Awarded José and Digna López from the Diocese of Stockton its highest annual award-  The Lumen Christi Award for their service to young people and migrant workers.  The award also brings a $50,000 grant for their ministry. Rudy Vargas IV

At the Pastoral Hispana de Conjunto a la Luz de la Nueva Evangelización Conference in Las Vegas, our fellow classmate and soon to be contributor, Rudy Vargas, received the Willam Sadlier Dinger Award for Ministry in the Hispanic Community. Rudy has ministered with the Hispanic Community for the last 25 years, he was the first president and founding member of the National Catholic Association of Diocesan Directors of Hispanic Ministry and the National Catholic Network for Pastoral Juvenil Hispana- La Red.  He currently serves as Field Consultant in the Archdiocese of New York, Alliance for Catholic Education Consulting for the University of Notre Dame.

 

Petra Alexander

petra2Petra Alexander, Coordinator for Hispanic Ministry at the Diocese of San Bernardino since 2003, was also recognized at the Pastoral Hispana de Conjunto a la Luz de la Nueva Evangelización Conference, where she received the Outstanding Diocesan Director of Hispanic Ministry Award, presented by Loyola Press.  As part of this award she received a monetary gift of $500 and $1,500 for use in her ministry.  Petra is a writer who contributes to many publishing companies on topics such as Liturgy, Quinceañeras, youth, and prison ministry.  Petra has coordinated a national hotline called EMPLEO, that offers support in Spanish and documents the abuse of Hispanic workers.  Petra also has produced a weekly one hour radio show on Radio Catolica El Sembrador for the past ten years.  Those of us who know Petra, really respect and love her as a person and a minister.
