On Friday, June 26, 2015 Instituto Fe y Vida hosted the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony of the institute’s new offices at Lewis University in Romeoville, IL. The dedication ceremony started with a warm welcome by Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President of Lewis University, who spoke of the various dimensions of this new relationship which is sure to benefit both Lewis University and Fe y Vida in numerous, enriching ways that advance their respective Missions.
Then Dr. Carmen M. Cervantes, EdD., Executive Director of Instituto Fe y Vida, expressed her gratitude to Lewis University and to the Christian Brothers of the Midwest District, for recognizing both the challenges and opportunities presented by the Latino population in the United States. Dr. Cervantes also thanked Fe y Vida staff, pastoral team and her family for the unconditional support they have provided throughout the years.
Br. Larry Schatz, FSC, Visitor/Provincial of the La Salle Christian Brothers, Midwest District, delivered the closing remarks, and spoke of the tremendous efforts made by Dr. Cervantes and Fe y Vida’s team. He said “Fe y Vida, has come a long way in the past two decades and coming to Lewis University is like returning home”.
The Christians Brothers of the Midwest District and a team of Hispanic pastoral ministers, led by Dr. Cervantes, co-founded Instituto Fe y Vida –Institute for Faith and Life, in 1994. The founders foretell the relationship with Lewis University will bring new opportunities to strengthen and advance Fe y Vida’s mission to empower young Catholic Latinos for leadership in Church and society. Today, Latinos make up more than half of the young Catholic Church in the United States.
